Adopt a New Approach
The SRM team based in Lincoln now includes five consultants and project managers with skills and experience across a range of specialties including renewable energy, eco-design, off-grid development, planning, environmental and landscape assessments, and Social Enterprise. The team provide consultancy advice to the public and private sectors as well as holding a range of training courses during the year, and organising the annual Hill Holt Wood Conference.
With climate change, depleting fossil fuel reserves, and the social consequences of living in a crowded country, some real opportunities exist to review our approach to countryside management and development to provide innovative and truly sustainable alternatives to the accepted practices. This approach incorporates the three legged theory with each leg representing a balance between the key elements of true sustainability; economic, social and environmental. Often thinking on sustainability typically includes economic and environmental factors, however in a true sense, the social or community aspects should also be considered, thus adopting a holistic approach.
Thankfully we are not alone in this thinking and already the SRM team are working with land owners, planners and investors building up projects which adopt this new approach, incorporating leading edge and pioneering schemes. Of course the planning system lags well behind this type of innovation, and whilst national intention as opposed to policy, may be making the right noises, the management of development through the planning process remains limited by the complex machinery of local plans and now Local Development Frameworks. Once again the SRM team are seeking to influence these to provide better support for true sustainable development in the future.
